Department: Laureate

Andy Van Fleet was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa. To those that know Andy it is no shock that he is a successful entrepreneur. He comes from a long line of five generations of entrepreneurs in the Cedar Valley, starting back in 1898.

Andy attended Waterloo West and eventually attended the University of Northern Iowa. Andy remembers having Junior Achievement in school and connecting with the volunteer and realizing from the experience that there are jobs out there that you would not even consider.

In 1997, Andy worked for Team Technologies designing web applications for Principle insurance agents. Here he met his future partner Kurt Vander Wiel. In 1999, Kurt went to work for a dot.com startup company and he convinced Andy to take the leap with him. This was during the dot.com boom and soon the bubble burst. After working long hours and weekends during this time, Andy reevaluated his priorities and decided that he wanted to return to the Cedar Valley. Due to the shortage of jobs in his field of expertise, Andy started Darning Pixels.

In 2007, Andy had enough consistent work to hire his first full time employee. During this time, Kurt Vander Wiel formed Visual Logic and was outsourcing some of the work to Andy at Darning Pixels. Their relationship continued to expand and in 2010 when both companies needed additional people, they decided to put their resources together and in 2011 the two merged into Visual Logic Group where the business focuses on the user online experience. Their main customers focus in the security, agriculture, military and insurance industries.

Andy strongly believes in giving back to the industry, so much so that his internship program to train and develop students into highly qualified specialists has partnered the firm with the University of Northern Iowa to teach this segment of website development. According to Maureen Collins-Williams, “Andy’s leadership in seeking out young people to bring along into the field is legendary. He has a reputation for ‘discovering’ talent, providing supportive empowerment for those young and inexperienced interns and staff, then dedicating energy and dollars to insure they have every opportunity to succeed. There are dozens upon dozens of young and successful individuals in the UX and web development field today because of Andy’s commitment to their success.”

Andy’s key to success has been to surround himself with amazing people who are honest, talented, have great perspective, and are comfortable enough to disagree with him and debate the risks and opportunities.

Kurt Vander Wiel describes Andy as “having an implicit understanding of nearly every situation, outgoing, and a perfectionist with old fashioned values.” He says, “Andy is determined to make something unproven work and he is always willing to take the risk.”

Andy’s dedication to the Cedar Valley community is so completely engrained that Andy was determined to make a living here and motivated to keep other good people here affording them good jobs within his industry.

Ryan Risetter notes, “Andy is vested in everyone he has relationships with. He loves to teach and help people grow and develop.”

Andy is married to Holly Van Fleet and together they are raising their beautiful family, Mac and Bella.
