A native of Waterloo, David Le Compte graduated from the University of Northern with a degree in marketing. While attending college, one of David’s jobs included cleaning the office of Short’s Travel Management, Inc. Little did he know, he would later return and move to the role of President and CEO.
In January of 1991, a job at Baxter Healthcare Corporation moved him to Omaha. David was immediately successful earning numerous trips and awards including earning the Distinguished Sales Club Award, the top sales award given in the company. Also, he was the top ranked full line sales representative.
In 1995 his mother-in-law sparked his interest in the travel industry where he joined her company, Short’s Travel, as Executive Vice President. Under his leadership, the company nearly doubled in size over night after securing John Deere’s North American travel contract. Later after the acquisition of Passport Travel the company again doubled in size. After the tragedy of September 11, LeCompte and others at Short’s Travel became creative and strategic in their marketing approach while others in the business were forced to depart.
Today, Short’s has grown to 140 employees in 21 locations and has a presence in Florida, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and New Jersey.
David and his wife, Stephanie, have three children; Nathan, Meta, and Caroline. This busy father still managed to find time to complete his MBA with the University of Iowa. Also, he found time to get involved in a number of organizations including: GCVA, Global Star Management, Hogg Robinson Group Affiliates, Junior Achievement, Hickory Travel Systems, and United Way.
Mr. LeCompte feels exposing young people at an early age to economics and the free enterprise system not only opens their eyes to possible career paths, but give them a basic understanding of what makes the backbone of this country. David LeCompte is an ambitious businessman who believes in taking calculated risks. He views this as the key to his success along with clearly defined written goals.
