Herbert A. Wilson

Engineer, Businessman, Entrepreneur

Laureate 2006

Born in Chicago, the youngest of eight Children, Herb Wilson came to Iowa in 1973 to build Iowa’s first steel mill in Wilton, Iowa. After many years in the steel industry, Herb’s entrepreneurial spirit inspired him to purchase a new venture, Micro-Surface Finishing Products, Inc. It was Herb’s vision that led this abrasive manufacturing company’s growth until its sale in 2000. It was Herb Wilson’s continuing zest and entrepreneurial passion that led to Startups Unlimited, Inc. in 1993, a company offering consulting services for budding entrepreneurs throughout Eastern Iowa.

In addition to his love of business, The Wilson’s love of community is evident. Along with his bride of 54 years, Janice, Herb has been visibly active in helping the non profit community thrive. Giving freely of his abundant leadership to Rotary, the Preucil School of Music, First Presbyterian Church, the Chamber of Commerce, the Iowa Children’s Museum, Hoover Library, United World College, Mercy Hospital Foundation and the Johnson County Community Foundation Board, Herb strives to make the Johnson County area a better place to live, work and play for all. Although billed as a native of Chicago, schooled at Purdue, Herb Wilson is a Hawkeye at heart!
