Mudd Advertising

Laureate 2008

In 1981, Jim Mudd Sr. was encouraged by local car dealer, John Deery Sr., to start an advertising agency serving car dealers. The drive and entrepreneurial spirit of Jim has taken him more places in life than any automobile could ever travel.

Throughout the next 27 years, Jim gained more and more clients and was asked to speak at the National Auto Dealers Association, where he received hundreds of business leads from around the country. To help with the rapid influx of new clients, he has expanded Mudd Advertising from its beginnings in the basement of his Cedar Falls’ home to offices in the Cedar Falls Technology and Industrial Park, where it occupies four buildings on its nearly 20 acre campus. Further growth has brought offices in Chicago, Nashville, and most recently Los Angeles, where Mudd Advertising goes head to head with some of the largest advertising agencies in the world everyday.

Mudd Advertising’s most important asset in the opinion of Jim Sr, its Chief Spiritual Officer, are its nearly 200 employees. He encourages honesty, trust and faith through Gung Ho, a motivational team building program. He began a book club which provides free books to help employees grow personally and professionally. Jim also established Mudd University, an internal leadership program which encourages employees to become strong leaders at work, home, and in the community. He encourages others and has truly demonstrated Servant Leadership throughout his professional and personal life. He has instilled in his family and business the values of faith, family and friends.

Jim supports the community through his many monetary donations and also by volunteering his time. He was the Master of Ceremony for the Cedar Falls Sturgis Falls Parade from 1976 to 2003. He currently serves on the Executive Board and National Board for Lead Like Jesus. He has served on the Western Home Board and the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center. Jim and his wife, Cecelia, were co-chairs of the financial campaign that raised $2 million for the new Cedar Falls Library; they currently serve as co-chairpersons for the 2009 United Way campaign.

Jim and Cecelia have been additionally blessed with six children who have been dedicated and committed to the success of the family business, along with nine grandchildren who always bring smiles to their faces.
