Some might say the entrepreneurial spirit runs deep in Jim Coloff’s blood. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jim started his first radio station at the young age of 24 and currently owns and operates two stations in Iowa. The success he’s seen in his career naturally parallels his accomplishments as a community leader. The vision and impact Jim gives to the organizations he’s involved with are quite remarkable, as he continually strives to find opportunities to make a difference.

Watching his father successfully begin a radio station in his hometown of Forrest City, Iowa gave Jim a bird’s-eye view of how the radio industry worked. That early start paid off for Jim, as he established his own radio station at the young age of 24, and currently owns and operates two stations in Iowa. This entrepreneurial spirit can also be found in the many leadership roles Jim plays throughout several Cedar Valley organizations.

Starting Jamie & Jim’s Kids, a non-profit organization created to provide a worry-free vacation for chronically and terminally ill children of the Cedar Valley area, shows Jim’s true passion for people and kids especially. The volunteer-driven staff of Jamie & Jim’s Kids strives to help bring small dreams to life for children who are battling a terminal or chronic illness by taking them on a trip to Walt Disney World. Jim says that as a parent, he knows how special it is to see a child happy. “These kids could find a whole lot to be unhappy about, but they find a way to make it. I want to help them have an experience every child should have, regardless of how long they'll be with us.”

Jim takes that personal, heart-felt attitude when serving in all of his community organizations. Jim is very involved in the Cedar Valley as he serves as a Board Member, Ambassador, & Past Chairman of the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce, Board Member and Past President of the Cedar Falls Rotary Club, VP and Board Member of the Waterloo Community Theater, Board Member of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Dollars for Scholars, Past President for the Marketing, Advertising & Communication Professionals of NE Iowa, Service Key Award Recipient from the Iowa State Alumni Association in 2003, and the Rotary Volunteer Award Recipient in 2002.

Today, Jim is the General Manager and Owner of both KCNZ Mix 96 in Cedar Falls and KMCH in Manchester, where he employs 24 people. Some of Jim's favorites include Hootie and the Blow Fish, Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks, Kristy McNichol, steak, mashed potatoes, angel food cake, ice cream, the outdoors, antiques, and the Iowa State Cyclones.

When Jamie asked me to join him to help Cedar Valley children, I knew we had a great opportunity to make a difference.
