Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, John was a familiar face around Diamond V Mills. Diamond V Mills, Inc. is a global nutrition health company that manufactures and markets all-natural nutritional products to improve animal performances. The company was founded by John’s grandfather, C.W. Bloomhall in 1943. John grew up around the business and often spent Saturdays going to work with his father. Later he began working at the plant doing odd jobs and factory work during school vacations throughout college.
John earned a Bachelors of Art degree in Accounting from the University of Wyoming and sat for the CPA exam. Following college, he returned to Cedar Rapids and began to work for IBM. After many promotions, John landed a job at the IBM Headquarters in Washington D.C. John realized that staying with IBM as a career would mean that his home would remain on the east coast. At that point in time, John’s brother, W.A. Bloomhall, II, was the President and CEO of Diamond V Mills. After speaking with his father and brother, he realized although he loved working at IBM, it would be best for him to return to the family business. Risking the “3rd generation family curse,” John joined the Diamond V family on July 1, 1988 as the 44th employee, the same year the company announced their second product.
John and his brother quickly realized that to be sustainable and successful in the future they would have to realign from a “family owned and managed business” to a “professionally managed business that is family owned.” Through this realignment, they saw an opportunity to place an added focus on their core values, address changing market needs, expand their international footprint, and concentrate on innovation and research. John took over as President and CEO on January 1, 1999, the same day Diamond V opened their new corporate headquarters.
John’s entrepreneurial spirit continues to shine through. In 2005, the company formed a wholly-owned subsidiary Embria Health Sciences in Ankeny to focus on immune system health for the human supplement market. Today more than 60% of company revenue is derived from products that did not exist in 2000 and nearly one of three Diamond V employees hold an advanced degree. Diamond V currently operates in 45 countries and revenues have nearly quadrupled during John’s reign. Locally, they have expanded into three locations with four facilities in Cedar Rapids, including their new global headquarters which opened in June of this year. The global expansion operates from five additional locations outside the United States.
Both John and Diamond V have been honored with many prestigious awards. In 2009, John was presented the Entrepreneurial Achievement Award by the Iowa Biotechnology Association and in 2010, he received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Agriculture for the Central Midwest Region. Also in 2009, Diamond V received the Faces of Trade™ Award from the US Chamber of Commerce. However, one of the most impactful moments in John’s career was the 2008 flood where his passion for his Diamond V family and beloved community was showcased. John sprang into action and had their headquarters gutted, rebuilt, refurbished and in use in less than three months. Their manufacturing plant was in operation eight and a half days after they regained access. Throughout the entire process, John had a focus on the employees and ensured them their salaries and positions were secure and funds were available to assist those with flooded homes. John did not stop once his employees and company were taken care of. He was, and continues to be, a voice for flood recovery and prevention for the city and people of Cedar Rapids.
John is revered as an outgoing, kind-hearted, team-minded leader who would much rather “have a Super Bowl championship than a MVP ring”. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for: Wells Fargo Bank, Kirkwood Community College Foundation, Tanager Place and Tanager Place Foundation, Iowa Limestone Company. He also serves on the Indian Creek Nature Center’s Board of Trustees and is active in the American Feed Industry Association. John continues to lead Diamond V and loves spending time with his wife Cindy and daughter Bailey.
