After graduating from the University of Iowa in 1956, John Buchanan co-founded the insurance consulting firm Riepe, Buchanan & Piper (RBP), which later merged with Marsh & McLennan Companies, a Fortune 100 company and the world’s leading insurance broker and consulting services firm. Buchanan’s vision and creative style allowed RBP to offer small and medium-sized companies the opportunity to purchase benefit and pension plans designed for very large companies.
In 1989, John was one of 20 United States entrepreneurs to be selected to participate in the Price-Babson Fellows Program at Babson College. The program impacted John’s life in a big way and led him to his love of teaching entrepreneurial education at the University of Iowa. Although John has retired from his 10 years of teaching, he still continues to mentor students in the process of starting their own businesses.
Mr. Buchanan is actively involved in philanthropy, giving generously of his personal time and financial support to the University of Iowa, the Iowa City Public Library, Hancher Auditorium, the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics and the Ronald McDonald House, just to name a few.
