Pat established World Class Industries (previously Iowa Midland Supply, Inc.) in 1992, with a vision based on value, trust and relationships. This vision has established World Class Industries as a partner that customers, suppliers and other stakeholders can rely on to do business the right way, exemplifying integrity and creating relationships that are long term.
“His style and innovative attitude allowed us to change the traditional business model and place new types of business with World Class Industries,” says Jim Schrempf, Vice President, Global Supply Management (retired), John Deere Ag and Turf Division. “In an era that is moving to a purely transaction-based model, Pat’s relationship-based model was valued.”
During his leadership, the company flourished financially and through significant employee growth, expanding to $150 million in annual revenue and to more than 100 employees.
Pat used his leadership to successfully navigate the difficult task of perpetuating a family business to the next generation. He adeptly brought his son into the business in 2003 and subsequently transitioned leadership and ownership control, setting the business up for continuing prosperity.
Pat now serves as chairman of the company, and currently sits on the board for several organizations, including Guaranty Bank and Trust Company, Guaranty Bankshares LLC, Illinois Valley Plastics, Marion Tool and Die, and Morton Industries Holdings LLC.
Pat’s commitment to leadership and relationship-building expands beyond his professional career and into our community. In 2013, he was recognized for his philanthropic efforts, receiving the Association of Fund Raising Philanthropic Award.
Zach Johnson, professional golfer and PGA Tour member, summed up Pat’s efforts this way:
“A person of high integrity, I feel, is an individual who leads with high morals, who has no self-serving agenda, who listens and fully includes others’ opinions, who makes decisions that are proper, not popular, who genuinely cares for others, who evokes honesty and humility, and who has a heart that is selfless. They are givers. Pat Cobb is such a leader.”
Pat has been instrumental in establishing a vision and carrying out the mission for a variety of charitable organizations throughout eastern Iowa, including: Zach Johnson Foundation (Chairman 2010 – present) , University of Northern Iowa Foundation, Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, Iowa District East Church Extension Fund Trustee, Cedar Rapids Jaycees, Kirkwood Community College Facilities Foundation (1978 – 1999), and Community Corrections Improvement Association (Chairman 1991 – 2001).
He is married to Sandra Cobb, and the couple have two children, Brent, 41, and Jodi, 38, who share their father’s generous spirit and philanthropic nature.
Co-nominator Dwight Hughes, Hughes Nursery and Landscaping, has this to say about Pat:
“Pat has always displayed the highest ideals of integrity in family, business and community.”
The outstanding level of integrity, leadership and vision that Pat displays in business and in life continues to make our community a better place.
