Laureate 2017

Patrick Gavin’s early-adult life was focused on entrepreneurship. He turned out to be pretty good at it, and his success throughout the years has led to the type of community engagement and volunteerism that any community would welcome.

Born in 1976, Patrick graduated from Iowa City High School in 1994 and went to Xavier University where he studied marketing, business administration and management.

In 15-plus years of online and digital marketing, Patrick has founded multiple online marketing companies. Along the way, he’s become a leader in the post-secondary education industry.

Currently, he is CEO of Since the company’s founding in 2008, has become the largest marketplace in the country that connects prospective post-secondary students with college and universities that offer online programs that match their search criteria.

The company started out by creating a network of education-focused websites through the building of extensive libraries of high-quality resources and guides for students interested in attending an online program. As the number of visitors grew, Patrick worked with schools throughout the nation so that they could better connect with students who wanted to learn more about online program offers, and application and enrollment requirements.

Patrick was instrumental in developing a new business unit within the company called Online Program Management, which further integrates the company’s services with not-for-profit schools and universities. This includes long-term partnerships with schools in which provides all the digital marketing recruiting and enrollment services for schools that are new to online strategies and desire to grow their online enrollments.

Along the way, Patrick and his wife, Amanda, were growing their family. They have five children: Grace, Jack, Stella, Scarlett and Olive.

As parents of young children, they created the Gavin Family Fund.
Patrick’s gifts have served education with support for public and private schools, multiple children’s organizations, homeless organizations, healthcare for infants and children, and arts and cultural opportunities.

Mike Stoffregen, of the Community Foundation of Johnson County, had this to say about Patrick’s philanthropic efforts: “Each thoughtful gift has benefited countless others in the Johnson County community while providing children with lessons in humanitarian giving. He is truly our champion – selflessly giving to help those less fortunate get a good start in life by paying it forward to serve others.”

Patrick’s community involvement includes coaching youth baseball and basketball, and constant mentoring of local business owners.

A partial list of companies Patrick helped create, and boards he has served with, include: Co-founder and CEO (2008-present), Co-founder and CEO of (2003-2008), Co-founder and board member of (2016-present), Co-founder and board member of (2015-present), Co-founder and board member of (2012-2016), and Co-founder of Gavin Historical Bricks (1999-2003).

In 2007, Patrick was an E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year finalist in the Central Midwest Region. His early and sustained entrepreneurial success has allowed Patrick to spread his wings in philanthropic efforts and our communities are benefiting from that generosity.
