University Book & Supply
Rose Lorenz was born in Independence, Iowa, daughter of Jim and Florence Lee. Rose is a longtime resident of the Cedar Valley and graduate of Cedar Falls high school. She began her professional career at 1st National Bank of Cedar Falls, where she worked for four years, and then moved on to Midway Bank, where she worked for one year before joining University Book and Supply.
Rose began her career with University Book and Supply in 1977, serving as office manager. In 1993, she was promoted to treasurer and then became President in 1995, a position she has held since. Today, University Book and Supply owns three stores; a bookstore at the University of Northern Iowa as well as one at Hawkeye Community College, and a teacher resource store in Cedar Rapids. University Book and Supply’s goal is to exceed the expectations of the University of Northern Iowa through service, quality, and value. Friends and colleagues credit Rose’s success with always keeping the bookstore in the forefront, and helping to ensure that it is a premiere business. In addition, Rose is not afraid to be creative and try new things as a way to get customers in the door. She is a strong and capable leader, who has built a strong network of relationships in the Cedar Valley, which have helped her to be so successful. Besides the day to day oversight of running the business, Rose’s role also includes seeking opportunities to strengthen relationships with the University of Northern Iowa, Hawkeye Community College, and the educational communities of Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and Cedar Rapids.
In addition to being passionate about the UNI Panthers, Rose is also passionate about the community. She loves the Cedar Valley community and all it has to offer, and has served on many boards and committees over the years. Rose is currently a board member of the newly formed College Hill Partnership, as well as a board member of the Greater Cedar Valley Chamber of Commerce. She has been a UNI Foundation trustee since 2005, Business and Professional Women chairperson, member of the Cedar Falls Lion’s Club, board member for the College Hill Arts Festival, and served as a trustee of the Cedar Falls Utilities board from 1996-2002. Rose has also infused University Book and Supply’s culture with a commitment to give back to the community. Each year University Book and Supply donates time and talents to countless organizations. They are also strong financial contributors of many area organizations, including The American Red Cross, Greater Cedar Valley Chamber of Commerce, Cedar Valley United Way, Family Service League, Allen College of Nursing, Hearst Center for the Arts, local schools, and many more.
Rose credits her success as a business person to three mentors that have helped coach her both personally and professionally. She credits Bob Beach with teaching her about business and providing opportunities and challenges to learn, Pastor Lien, for teaching her to believe in her own impact, and Eva Lorenz, who provided Rose with encouragement and taught her about networking. Rose lives in Cedar Falls with her husband Stan. Together they have four grown children, Aaron, Amy, Angie, and Adam.
