Building Brighter Futures: How Junior Achievement Is Improving Economic Mobility for Eastern Iowa Students

What determines a young person's future?

For some, the answer seems simple. They grow up surrounded by opportunities, have adults who help them explore career options, understand the value of education, and feel confident making decisions about their future. For others, that path isn't nearly as clear. They may have never met an engineer, a welder, a business owner, or a healthcare professional. They may not understand how education connects to careers or how the financial decisions they make today can shape their opportunities tomorrow.

That's where economic mobility begins.

Economic mobility is about creating opportunities. It means helping young people gain the knowledge, experiences, confidence, and connections they need to build successful futures, regardless of where they start. At Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa, that belief drives everything we do.

Every day, we partner with educators, volunteers, businesses, and community leaders to help students connect classroom learning with the real world. Whether students are participating in a classroom program, exploring careers at JA Career Inspire®, managing a business at JA BizTown® Mobile, making financial decisions at JA Finance Park® Mobile, or solving real business challenges through 3DE™ by Junior Achievement, they are doing more than learning new concepts. They are discovering opportunities, developing essential life skills, and beginning to see themselves in careers they may have never imagined.

Those experiences matter because students cannot aspire to opportunities they have never seen. When they meet professionals who share their career journeys, explore industries that are thriving right here in Eastern Iowa, and practice making real-world decisions in a supportive environment, they begin to understand that their future is filled with possibilities. They start to recognize that success is not reserved for a select few—it is something they can work toward with the right preparation, support, and determination.

Improving economic mobility also benefits our communities. As Eastern Iowa employers continue to seek skilled, adaptable employees, preparing students for successful careers has never been more important. When students graduate with a stronger understanding of the workplace, greater confidence in their abilities, and a clearer vision for their future, they are better equipped to contribute to our region's economy and strengthen the communities where they live and work.

That is why Junior Achievement's mission extends beyond the classroom. We are helping students build the confidence to pursue their goals, connect with caring adults who encourage them, and develop the skills that will open doors throughout their lives. These experiences create a foundation for lifelong success while helping employers develop the workforce they will depend on in the years ahead.

Last school year, Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa provided more than 53,000 student experiences, reaching a record number of young people across the region. During our 60th anniversary school year, we also celebrated serving more than one million students throughout our history. While those milestones are worth celebrating, they also remind us that our work is far from finished.

Every student deserves the opportunity to discover their potential and build a future filled with possibility. By connecting education with real-world experiences and meaningful relationships, Junior Achievement is helping accelerate economic mobility for students across Eastern Iowa—creating stronger futures for individuals, businesses, and the communities we all call home.
