November is National Entrepreneurship Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the visionaries and innovators who fuel our economy and drive change in our communities. One such entrepreneur is Brandon Pratt, the founder of Lion Development Group and Gravy Train Restaurant Group. With over 23 years of professional experience—and a passion for business that dates back to his childhood—Brandon’s journey is both inspiring and enlightening.

Early Beginnings

Brandon’s entrepreneurial spirit ignited at a young age, thanks to the influence of his father, a general contractor and developer. At just 11 years old, he started a snow plowing business alongside his dad, laying the foundation for a lifelong passion for entrepreneurship. “My father was my main influence,” Brandon recalls. “He taught me a relentless work ethic and the importance of seizing opportunities. His motto, ‘no one cares, work harder,’ has been my guiding light through tough times.”

This early exposure to the world of business shaped Brandon's perspective and prepared him for the challenges that lay ahead.

The Drive to Succeed

What motivates Brandon on a daily basis? It’s a combination of personal and profound inspirations. First and foremost are his family—his wife Jennifer and their four adopted sons from Brazil. “I want to provide them with opportunities they could never have imagined,” he explains. Additionally, past experiences of being told “no” fuel his determination to succeed. “Those words push me to prove others wrong,” he says.

Brandon believes that each person is endowed with unique talents and a purpose. “Leading people and following Christ is my gift,” he shares. “It’s my duty to live that out.”

Overcoming Challenges

Like many entrepreneurs, Brandon faced significant challenges when starting his business. At just 18, he became a licensed Realtor, but his youth often cast doubt on his abilities. “The first five years were tough. Convincing people I had the experience necessary to succeed was frustrating,” he admits. Nevertheless, Brandon persevered, proving that age does not define capability.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those considering starting their own business, Brandon offers sage advice: “It’s going to be a grind. Choose a business that you love. It’s easier to push through tough times when you’re passionate about what you do.” He emphasizes the importance of controlling what you can and not getting bogged down by what you cannot.

The Impact of Education

Brandon credits a significant part of his entrepreneurial education to his involvement in the Business Professionals of America (BPA) during high school. “Mrs. Fickel taught us real-world skills—how to balance a checkbook, create a budget, and interview for jobs. It was transformative for me,” he reflects. This experience is one of the reasons he became involved with Junior Achievement (JA), aiming to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs with essential life skills.

Commitment to Junior Achievement

Since joining the JA board in 2019, Brandon has been an advocate for providing young people with the tools they need to succeed. “We need to empower kids with life skills that aren’t always taught in schools,” he emphasizes. “Entrepreneurship is a viable path to success, and it’s crucial for students to know that self-made success stories are common.”

Conclusion

Brandon Pratt's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and purpose. As we celebrate National Entrepreneurship Month, let his story remind us that with the right mindset and support, anyone can forge their path and make a lasting impact.
