From Curiosity to Confidence: How One Educator Is Shaping Student Futures

In classrooms across the Cedar Rapids Community School District, educators are shaping more than lesson plans—they’re shaping futures. For Ann Jameson, that work is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: every student has potential, and it’s her role to help them see it.

Now in her 18th year as an educator, Ann’s journey into teaching was fueled by a deep passion for science—and an even deeper commitment to her students. She didn’t just want to teach content; she wanted to open doors. To possibilities. To confidence. To futures students might not yet see for themselves.

“I wanted to show that background doesn’t define potential,” she explains. “What matters is curiosity, determination, supportive relationships, and meaningful goals.”

That philosophy has guided her career as she’s taught science across grades 6–12 and now supports magnet schools as a magnet teacher lead. Her role has evolved, but her purpose has stayed the same: helping both students and fellow educators grow.

Each day, Ann is motivated by the ripple effect of her work. While she focuses on supporting teachers and strengthening learning environments, she never loses sight of the bigger picture—knowing that even the smallest contributions can lead to meaningful, lasting impact for students.

That mindset is what drew her to Junior Achievement.

This year, Ann became involved by supporting the implementation of 3DE at Washington High School’s freshman academy, while also integrating JA curriculum into freshman seminar courses. Through programs like JA Career Essentials® and JA Stock Market Challenge®, her students have been able to engage in learning that goes beyond the textbook.

“These experiences provide students with practical, real-world skills they can apply in future academic, career, and life experiences,” she says.

For Ann, the value of Junior Achievement lies in how it transforms learning. It encourages students to ask questions, work together, and think critically—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

“Junior Achievement’s curriculum helps students be investigative, curious, and collaborative,” she explains. “It gives them meaningful practice with transferable skills and helps them connect learning to real-world contexts.”

And those connections matter.

By engaging in hands-on, relevant experiences, students begin to see how their education ties into their future. They build confidence. They practice decision-making. They start to imagine what’s possible—and how to get there.

That alignment between education and real-world readiness is something Ann sees as essential.

“Students develop confidence and problem-solving skills that directly translate to future academic pursuits, career exploration, and long-term success,” she says.

It’s no surprise that someone so passionate about learning and discovery once found success on a different kind of court. Ann played basketball at Missouri State University and competed in the 2001 Women’s Final Four—a testament to her own determination and drive. And while her path ultimately led her to the classroom, her love of exploration still runs deep. If she weren’t an educator, she imagines herself working as a naturalist in a national park, helping others connect with the world around them.

But for now, her “park” is the classroom—and the students she inspires every day.

During Teacher Appreciation Week, we celebrate educators like Ann Jameson who go beyond teaching content to ignite curiosity, build confidence, and create pathways for students to thrive. Through her work—and her partnership with Junior Achievement—she is helping shape a generation that is not only prepared for what’s next, but empowered to pursue it.

Because when students believe in what’s possible, everything changes.
