As Iowa updates its K–12 social studies standards, educators across the state are asking an important question: How do we bring these standards to life in meaningful, engaging ways for students?

At Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa, the answer is simple—through real-world, experiential learning that connects classroom concepts to everyday life.

A Stronger Focus on Financial Literacy and Real-World Skills

Recent updates to Iowa’s social studies standards place an increased emphasis on financial literacy, economic decision-making, and preparing students for life beyond the classroom. These changes reflect what educators and employers alike have been saying for years: students need practical, applicable skills to succeed in today’s world.

Junior Achievement has been delivering exactly that for decades.

Our programs are designed to help students understand how money works, how businesses operate, and how their choices impact their future—all while reinforcing the academic standards teachers are required to meet.

Built-In Alignment Across Grade Levels

Junior Achievement’s curriculum aligns directly with Iowa’s updated standards at every grade level, providing educators with turnkey support.

In elementary school, students begin building foundational knowledge:

  • Kindergarten students explore needs vs. wants through JA Ourselves®
  • First grade students learn about families, work, and decision-making with JA Our Families®
  • Second grade students gain a full understanding of saving and spending through JA Our Community®, supporting 100% of related standards

As students progress, their learning deepens:

  • Third through fifth grade students explore budgeting, regional economies, and national systems through programs like JA Our City® and JA Our Nation®
  • Middle school students engage in more advanced financial literacy through JA BizTown® Mobile and JA Finance Park® Mobile, with some programs supporting up to 100% of state standards

This progression ensures students are not only meeting standards—but truly understanding them.

Experiential Learning That Sticks

What sets Junior Achievement apart is how students learn.

Rather than relying solely on textbooks, JA programs use:

  • Hands-on activities
  • Real-world simulations
  • Volunteer-led instruction
  • Interactive discussions

This approach helps students retain information, apply concepts, and build confidence in their decision-making.

Experiences like JA BizTown® Mobile and JA Finance Park® Mobile allow students to step into real-life roles—managing budgets, making financial decisions, and understanding how communities function. These immersive experiences reinforce classroom learning in a way that traditional instruction alone cannot.

And for educators, it provides a trusted partner in delivering learning that truly matters.
