My First JA BizTown® Mobile Experience: Learning, Growing, and Inspiring Future Leaders

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to experience JA BizTown^® Mobile firsthand in the Iowa City Community School District—and what an experience it was! Watching students step into real-world roles, tackle challenges, and embrace new responsibilities was nothing short of inspiring.

For those unfamiliar, JA BizTown^® Mobile is a hands-on, immersive program that transforms a school gym or large space into a fully interactive town. Students take on different roles—CEOs, bank tellers, store managers, elected officials, and more—learning what it takes to run a business, manage personal finances, and actively participate in their community. It’s a unique blend of financial literacy, career exploration, and civic engagement, all wrapped into one dynamic experience.

A Day of Discovery and Growth

From the moment the students arrived, their excitement was contagious. Some were eager to jump into their leadership roles, while others were a little unsure. But as the day unfolded, I saw incredible growth in their confidence and skills.

One of the most powerful moments was watching students overcome their fear of public speaking. Many of them started the day hesitant about presenting in front of their peers, but by the end, they were delivering speeches and making announcements with newfound confidence.

Another highlight was the voting process. Before casting their ballots, students learned how to register to vote, why elections matter, and how their choices impact their community. It was amazing to see them engage in the democratic process, many realizing for the first time just how important civic participation is.

Beyond voting and public speaking, students got a taste of business management and teamwork. Whether they were selling products, managing staff, or making financial decisions, they quickly learned the importance of communication, organization, and working together toward a common goal.

Lessons That Extend Beyond the Classroom

JA BizTown^® Mobile is more than just a one-day simulation—it’s a transformational experience that teaches students real-world skills they’ll carry into the future. They learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and collaboration while discovering how businesses and communities thrive when everyone plays their part.

I walked away from the day inspired. Watching students realize that being active in their community matters, that teamwork is essential, and that everyday life skills like managing money and making informed decisions are crucial reinforced just how impactful this program is.

As I reflect on my first JA BizTown^® Mobile experience, I can’t help but feel excited for the next one. Seeing these students step up, take ownership, and truly engage with the experience reminded me why Junior Achievement’s mission is so important. The future is bright, and these students are well on their way to becoming the leaders, entrepreneurs, and engaged citizens of tomorrow.
