From Junior Achievement Student to JA Volunteer Leader
For volunteer and Cedar Valley Community Impact Board member, Junior Achievement isn’t just a program she supports — it helped shape the path that led to her career today.
Born and raised in Clinton, Iowa, Danica graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with degrees in Finance and Real Estate. Today, she serves as a Retail Manager at Heartland Bank and Trust while raising two children with her husband in Cedar Falls.
Her connection to JA began long before she became a volunteer.
“I remember participating in Junior Achievement in 8th grade,” Danica shared. “My JA student experience was that foundational moment that led me on the business career path.”
That experience stayed with her, and when the opportunity to volunteer with JAEI came along in 2012, she immediately said yes.
“I have a strong passion for financial literacy,” she said. “When the opportunity to volunteer arose, I had to jump at it.”
Over the past 14 years, Danica has become a familiar face across many JAEI programs. She has taught students in kindergarten, first, second, and fifth grades and has expanded her involvement beyond the classroom to support programs and events including BizTown Mobile by Junior Achievement, JA Career Inspire, and the JA Stock Market Challenge® in Cedar Valley. She also recently completed her term as Chair of the Cedar Valley Community Impact Board and will continue serving as a board member.
For Danica, one of the best parts of volunteering is the energy students bring into the classroom.
“I enjoy being in the classroom, the energy the kids have, and connecting with students,” she said.
Her experience volunteering has reinforced the importance of helping students build confidence and understand the possibilities ahead of them. Through JA programs, students gain exposure to financial literacy, career pathways, entrepreneurship, and real-world skills that help prepare them for future success.
Danica encourages anyone considering volunteering to simply take the first step.
“Life is about saying yes and trying new things,” she said. “It’s fun to be in the classroom and personalize your teaching. If you are nervous, find a friend or co-worker to co-teach with you. Volunteering in our community is one of the best ways we can contribute, make a difference, and in return we find personal growth.”
From former JA student to volunteer, board chair, and community leader, Danica’s story is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact volunteers can have on students — and how one classroom experience can help inspire what’s next.
