For Dr. Danielle Riney, the path to education started with a spark—one ignited by a middle school science teacher who saw potential before she fully saw it in herself. That early encouragement didn’t just build confidence—it changed the trajectory of her life.
“I didn’t realize the confidence I had,” she reflects. “But that experience opened my eyes to what was possible.”
Today, Dr. Riney is doing the same for others. As a Secondary Curriculum Coordinator in the Iowa City Community School District, she works behind the scenes and alongside educators to strengthen science and English language arts instruction. With 15 years in education—and experience teaching everything from middle school to high school—she understands that meaningful impact doesn’t always happen in a single moment. It builds over time, through relationships, growth, and opportunity.
And that’s exactly what drives her.
“I’m motivated by helping educators grow in their practice and knowing that my work positively impacts student learning,” she says. “Seeing progress—whether it’s a teacher trying something new or a student gaining understanding—reminds me why this work matters.”
That belief aligns closely with a quote she carries with her daily from Nelson Mandela:
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Bringing Real-World Learning to Life
This year, Dr. Riney has played a key role in helping bring the JA Dream Accelerator™ experience to students in Iowa City. Through her work supporting Earth and Space Science teachers—and directly engaging with ninth-grade students—she’s helped bridge classroom learning with real-world application. From guiding students through JA lessons to supporting them as they explore industry-recognized microcredentials, she’s helping students connect education to their future in a tangible way.
But it’s during the experience itself where the impact becomes most visible. “I enjoy supporting students as they move through the Dream Accelerator,” she shares. “Hearing their perspectives—especially during the Reality Check station—is always insightful.”
In those moments, something shifts. Students begin to think differently. They start asking bigger questions. They begin connecting their interests, goals, and future possibilities in ways they hadn’t before.
Building Confidence for What Comes Next
One of Dr. Riney’s favorite parts of the experience happens after the simulation ends—during student reflection. “Debriefing with our ninth graders has been a fun activity,” she says. “They start to piece together their futures and build confidence. It’s rewarding to help them understand this is just the first step—and that many possibilities are still open to them.”
That mindset—possibility over limitation—is central to her work. She recognizes that preparing students for the future goes beyond content knowledge. It’s about building skills that translate to life beyond the classroom.
“Collaboration skills are incredibly important,” she explains. “And having the opportunity to learn from professionals is invaluable.”
Through experiences like the JA Dream Accelerator™, students aren’t just learning—they’re gaining the competencies, confidence, and connections needed to navigate their futures.
A Journey Rooted in Purpose
Interestingly, education wasn’t Dr. Riney’s original plan. She initially set out to become a pharmacist, but along the way, something didn’t feel quite right. Through hands-on experience, she realized her true passion was working with students—helping them discover opportunities and build confidence, just as her teacher once did for her.
Her story is a powerful reminder that career paths aren’t always linear—and that sometimes, the most meaningful work finds you.
Advice for Fellow Educators
For educators considering bringing Junior Achievement into their classrooms, Dr. Riney offers simple but powerful advice: “Take advantage of the opportunity. JA creates meaningful, real-world connections that help students see the relevance of their learning. Be open to the experience and give students space to explore, ask questions, and reflect—you may be surprised by the insights they gain.”
Shaping Futures, One Experience at a Time
Dr. Danielle Riney’s impact may not always happen in a single classroom or moment—but it’s felt across an entire system of educators and students. By supporting teachers, championing real-world learning, and helping students see what’s possible, she’s playing a critical role in building a future-ready workforce and stronger communities.
And it all started with one teacher who helped her believe in what was possible.
Now, she’s passing that belief forward.
