Meet Abby Turley, an inspiring educator from the Cedar Rapids Community School District, teaching at Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy (RCCBA). With 10 years of experience as an educator, Abby has not only shaped the minds of her students but also brought innovation to middle school education in Iowa.
Finding Her Path
Abby’s journey into education wasn’t planned. Initially pursuing a nursing career, Abby realized it wasn’t the right fit and found her calling through coaching softball. Witnessing her athletes achieve their goals ignited a passion for teaching. An Intro to Education course later, she was hooked, and her career as an educator began.
“I loved the feeling I got when one of my athletes saw success in something they had worked so hard for,” Abby shared.
Teaching Specialties
Abby began her career teaching American and World History for grades 5-12, but in 2022, she transitioned into uncharted territory—launching Iowa’s first middle school Business course. She now teaches Business Leadership at RCCBA, helping students explore career pathways and build employability skills.
A Partnership with Junior Achievement
When Abby started teaching Business Leadership, she sought guidance on how to create a meaningful curriculum for her students. She reached out to Junior Achievement (JA), and the collaboration was a game-changer.
“I didn’t know what topics would be most beneficial to cover... Knowing that JA had some programs in the business realm, I reached out... After meeting with Nate Klein and his team, I knew I would have all the resources I needed (and more!).”
Through JA, Abby has incorporated impactful programs such as JA It’s My Future, JA Economics for Success, JA Finance Park®, and JA Tools for Success.
“Abby is one of the most dedicated teachers I have had the pleasure of working with and it is evident in her practices in the classroom. Abby is willing to do whatever is necessary in order to benefit students. She is passionate about her education and inspiring and empowering her students to continue to push the limit. She is a strong advocate for Junior Achievement within her school and her school district and it is truly my pleasure to work alongside with her.” – Dani Carter, Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa Program Director
Finance Park: A Highlight of Success
One standout experience was bringing the JA Finance Park® simulation to RCCBA. Abby was thrilled by how interactive and realistic the simulation was, giving students an unforgettable taste of financial decision-making.
“Each student really had to think about their individual situation... It felt incredibly real, and students saw immense value that has stuck with them. They still talk about it and want to do it again so badly!”
Empowering Students
One of Abby’s favorite memories involves a student who, after participating in JA It’s My Future, applied for her first job. Nervous about her upcoming interview, the student sought Abby’s advice and aced the interview, securing the job on the spot.
“She was so proud of herself and has been at her new job for about a month (and loves it).”
Why Junior Achievement Matters
Abby believes JA programs provide students with real-world skills they will carry for a lifetime. From financial literacy to career exploration, the lessons resonate deeply with students and their families.
“Money is a language we all speak... Parents have said over and over how they wish they had classes that covered those things in school and that they are so thankful their kids are learning about it!”
Advice for Fellow Educators
For educators considering bringing JA into their classrooms, Abby’s advice is simple: “DO IT!”
“The JA staff are so helpful, responsive, and knowledgeable. The programs have everything you need but still allow you to adjust and differentiate based upon student needs.”
Thank you, Abby Turley, for your dedication to your students and your passion for education. Junior Achievement is proud to support educators like you in shaping the future of our students!
