At Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa, we are proud to recognize educators who go the extra mile to empower their students with real-world skills. This month, we’re excited to highlight Scott Davidson, a dedicated social studies teacher at Xavier Catholic Schools, who has been inspiring students for 18 years!
A Passion for Education
Scott’s journey into teaching wasn’t a traditional one—he switched careers to work with students, and it’s clear he found his true calling. Specializing in 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade social studies, he is motivated each day by spending time with his students and guiding them toward success.
Bringing Junior Achievement into the Classroom
Scott’s involvement with Junior Achievement(JA) began when a co-worker recommended it. Since then, he has consistently incorporated JA programs into his curriculum, using them as a valuable tool to teach students about financial literacy and career planning.
Favorite JA Activity?
Scott particularly enjoys the 8th-grade lessons on choosing interests and career clusters, emphasizing the importance of early career exploration.
“It’s important for students to start thinking about what classes to take in high school that might help when they’re ready to begin working toward a career.”
The Impact of JA on Students
Scott has seen firsthand how JA programs prepare students for the future, equipping them with skills to avoid financial pitfalls and make informed decisions about their careers.
“Financial literacy is so important. Students are learning how to avoid financial mistakes in their lives.”
Beyond the lessons, guest volunteers—including business owners, parents, and bankers—have played a vital role in helping students understand the importance of planning ahead for their careers and life goals.
A Unique Path to Teaching
Before becoming an educator, Scott had a career in television as the Promotions Director for KFXA Fox 28 in Cedar Rapids. While his path took a different direction, his passion for storytelling and engaging audiences has clearly translated into his teaching.
Encouraging Fellow Educators to Get Involved with JA
Scott actively encourages his colleagues to bring JA programs into their classrooms. In fact, his connection to JA even led to a special reunion with a fellow educator:
“Our ELA teacher used to be our JA volunteer. I met her through this program. When she decided to start teaching full-time again, I was thrilled when she came to LaSalle!”
Thank you, Scott, for your commitment to your students and for making a lasting impact through Junior Achievement!
