In a world where careers, industries, and technology are evolving faster than ever, today’s students need more than traditional learning to prepare for what comes next. They need the confidence, capability, competence, and connections that help them think creatively, solve problems, and recognize opportunity. That’s why Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa (JAEI) is committed to nurturing the entrepreneurial mindset—a way of thinking that strengthens economic mobility and helps students shape their futures with purpose.

Entrepreneurship as a Pathway to Economic Mobility

Entrepreneurship isn’t just about starting a business. It’s about unlocking possibility.

Through Junior Achievement’s (JA) interconnected approach to financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship, students learn how ideas become action, how problems spark innovation, and how their unique strengths can lead to new pathways. These experiences are essential to accelerating economic mobility—empowering young people to make informed decisions, create opportunities, and build the future they imagine for themselves.

Hands-On Programs That Bring Ideas to Life

At every grade level, JA programs encourage students to think like innovators:

  • Elementary students in programs like JA BizTown® Mobile explore how businesses operate, how leadership works, and how teams collaborate to solve challenges.
  • Middle school students engage in experiences that grow their creativity, adaptability, and critical thinking—skills that transfer to any career. Programs like JA Career Speaker Series® connect students directly with local professionals who share real-world experiences, while JA Economics for Success® helps them understand how personal finances, career choices, and planning for the future all play a role in creating opportunity. By learning how decisions about money, education, and careers shape their long-term possibilities, students begin to think like entrepreneurs—identifying problems, weighing risks, and seeing how their strengths can lead to new pathways. These lessons build the foundation for an entrepreneurial mindset that empowers students to turn ideas into action.
  • High school students gain deeper exposure to career pathways, budgeting, investing, and real-world problem-solving through 3DE™ by Junior Achievement, JA Finance Park® Mobile, and entrepreneurial simulations. They also meet real entrepreneurs during JA Career Inspire®, where they explore local industries, ask questions, and hear firsthand how innovators turn ideas into opportunities.

Whether they’re designing a solution for a challenge at 3DE™, launching a business in a classroom project, connecting with entrepreneurs at JA Career Inspire®, or managing a financial portfolio for the first time, JA students learn to trust their ideas and turn them into action.
