The start of 2025 has been filled with hands-on learning opportunities for students across Eastern Iowa! Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa has been busy providing students with real-world experiences designed to connect classroom lessons with career exploration, financial literacy, and personal development. From budgeting simulations to career fairs, these experiences help students build skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.

JA Finance Park® Mobile at Benton Community School – 8th Grade

In January, 60 8th graders at Benton Community School participated in JA Finance Park® Mobile, a hands-on simulation where students took on the role of working adults managing a budget. They made real-life financial decisions about housing, transportation, savings, and more. This interactive experience provided valuable lessons on money management, responsible spending, and financial independence—critical skills as students begin thinking about their future careers and financial goals.

456 4th graders in the Cedar Rapids Community School District attended the Equipment Exploration Fair, where they learned about different careers by interacting with industry professionals and exploring tools and machinery used in various trades. Students engaged in hands-on demonstrations, helping them visualize career opportunities in fields like construction, manufacturing, and public services. Events like these spark curiosity and help young learners see the many career paths available to them.

Union Community School 3rd & 4th Graders Visit UNI

In February, 86 3rd and 4th graders from Union Community School District took an exciting trip to the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Athletics Department. Students learned what it takes to be a student-athlete, the importance of balancing academics and sports, and the value of teamwork. They toured UNI’s athletic facilities, ran a lap inside the UNI Dome, and visited a locker room, getting a firsthand glimpse into the dedication required for success at the collegiate level. Experiences like these help inspire young minds to dream big and explore their future possibilities.

Looking Ahead: Experiential Learning Continues!

The excitement doesn’t stop here! Junior Achievement’s experiential learning opportunities will continue through the end of the school year, giving even more students the chance to participate in hands-on career and financial literacy experiences, including:

Another Equipment Exploration Fair for Cedar Rapids Community School District 4th graders.
More schools participating in JA Finance Park® Mobile, bringing financial education to more 8th grade students.
JA BizTown® Mobile hitting the road and traveling to schools, allowing students to experience running a simulated town, managing businesses, and learning the importance of financial decision-making.

These real-world learning experiences help prepare students for future success by fostering critical thinking, financial responsibility, and career readiness.
