When Heather Henning joined Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa (JAEI) in August 2023, she brought with her more than two decades of experience in youth development—and a passion for helping young people uncover what’s possible for their futures.

As JAEI’s Regional Experiential Learning Coordinator, Heather leads the charge on one of our largest initiatives: JA Career Inspire®, a two-day event that brings together nearly 70 local businesses and over 5,000 students each fall across the Cedar Valley and Corridor. But for Heather, the real magic happens between the booths—when a student sees something new and thinks, “That could be me.”

“I’ve always believed in the power of hands-on learning,” Heather says. “JA Career Inspire® gives students the chance to step into a role they may have never considered before, and truly imagine themselves in that space.”

Originally from California, Heather’s career has taken her around the world. She spent many years overseas as a contractor for the U.S. Army, supporting youth programs for military families. That global perspective continues to shape how she approaches her work today—making sure that every student, no matter their background, has the opportunity to discover their potential.

With a BA in Organizational Communications, a Master’s in Leisure, Youth & Human Services Administration, and training through the Civilian Army Leadership Advanced School, Heather brings both heart and expertise to her role.

She’s especially passionate about creating connections between students and their local communities through career speakers, job exploration activities, and immersive learning experiences. Whether she’s planning a large-scale event or coordinating classroom visits, her focus is always the same: real-world readiness.

“Junior Achievement (JA) builds critical skills in young people, and just as importantly, it brings the community into that process,” she says. “That’s why I joined JA, and it’s why I stay.”

Outside of work, Heather enjoys life on an acreage just south of Waterloo with her family. With three children spaced 14 years apart, her home life is a blend of toddler toys and teen milestones. The family enjoys gardening, kayaking, swimming, and traveling to see family on the West Coast—especially when it includes a spontaneous beach trip.

Heather is also a familiar face at local sports events and FFA competitions, where she cheers on her kids and volunteers as a chaperone.

We’re so lucky to have Heather on our team, helping JAEI deliver meaningful, engaging experiences that prepare students for what’s next. From her global experience to her local impact, she’s helping us build a future where every student can see their place in the world—and go after it.
