children. Now the CFO at Integrated Connection, Lisa’s journey with Junior Achievement (JA) is a return to an early dream—she originally started college with plans to become a teacher. While life took her in a different direction, her love for working with young learners never faded.
Married with three grown sons and five grandchildren—ranging from 10 years old to just 8 months—Lisa values family and community deeply. That’s part of what inspired her to begin volunteering with Junior Achievement two years ago. “I believe everyone has a responsibility to give back,” she says. For Lisa, that meant stepping into classrooms to help teach foundational life skills to kindergarten and third-grade students.
Despite not being naturally comfortable speaking in front of groups, Lisa found her confidence quickly once she met her first class. “The first day was nerve-wracking,” she admits, “but within minutes, I was totally at ease. The kids don’t have any expectations of you—they’re just so excited you’re there.” She credits JA’s thoughtfully designed curriculum for helping her feel prepared and supported from day one.
Some of her favorite moments include hands-on activities like rolling dice and coloring with the kindergartners, and building model cities in JA Our City with third graders. For Lisa, the magic is in the little things—like when a student remembers something she taught the week before. “It just feels good to be there,” she says. “You leave the classroom feeling like you really made a difference.”
Lisa has seen firsthand how JA gives students essential tools for life—skills they’ll build on for years to come. And she’s gained a new appreciation for teachers, too. “The way they interact with students is amazing. Collaborating with them has only strengthened the impact of the lessons.”
To anyone considering volunteering, Lisa offers heartfelt encouragement: “Just give it a try. The time commitment is small, the support is great, and the reward is huge. You’ll walk away feeling better than when you walked in.”
Thank you, Lisa, for your commitment to empowering young minds. Your dedication helps shape confident, capable students who are ready to take on the world!
